To observe the ecology of insects, besides raising ants and praying mantis, I also raised locusts. On the Chinese mainland, especially the arid north of the mainland, a locust plague is often regarded as punishment by heaven. Once these creatures sweep through an area, not an inch of crop is left, leading faces to pale at the mention of a locust plague. However, any living creature has an aspect that can move us. As it carefully observe this “pest” loathed by all, I discovered that their lovable and cute aspect. Through their tiny chirping, one can sense the joy of life. At this time, they no longer are harmful, but rather a pleasant surprise, and are a source of extending life, as well as passionate destiny. Seizing this moment allows one to fully savor the insight and ask: “Is the wind blowing?” “Is the grass rustling?” “Is it a momentary hookup, or a genuine love as wide as heaven and earth?”
When creating an incomparably minute work, what one fears most is to accidently hit something. A momentary slip causes the knife cut to be aslant, or to draw out an incorrect line, an imperfect carving point, an insufficiently realistic curve. However, the challenge of this work on the contrary was to make it moveable! As the first work made to be movable, the thin grass blades are as thick as real wild grass ones, with clearly demarcated veins and slightly trembling. Carving it was quite a test of endurance, skill and concentration. There are no people beside these two locusts, so they go about lovemaking in the large tract of land with glorious passion. This fully conveys that the observer who has raised these locusts has in every possible way captured their beauty, which gives one immediate insight!
